Tribute to Professor Heiko Wiggers
With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of our esteemed colleague and dear friend, Professor Heiko Wiggers, who departed this life on April 10, 2024.
Throughout his illustrious 19-year tenure in our department, Professor Wiggers touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends with his passion for teaching, unwavering dedication, and infectious enthusiasm. He was not merely an educator; he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration both inside and outside the classroom.
Hailing from northern Germany, Professor Wiggers embarked on an academic journey that took him across continents, culminating in the attainment of an MA from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. His scholarly pursuits traversed diverse realms, from his insightful research on Low German and endangered languages to his contributions in sociolinguistics and Business German.
Professor Wiggers’ impact extended far beyond academia, as he played a pivotal role in fostering cultural exchange and international collaboration. His leadership in spearheading the Business German program and orchestrating summer internships in Germany for students exemplified his commitment to providing enriching experiences and nurturing global perspectives.
Yet, it was Professor Wiggers’ profound influence as a mentor that truly defined his legacy. His genuine care, boundless empathy, and unwavering support guided generations of students along their academic and personal journeys, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
As we bid farewell to Professor Heiko Wiggers, we do so with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for the profound impact he made on our lives and our community. His wisdom and kindness will forever echo through the halls of our department, reminding us of the extraordinary person he was and the immeasurable loss we now endure.
Though he may no longer walk among us, Professor Wiggers’ legacy will endure as a beacon of light, inspiring us to carry forth his passion for learning, his dedication to excellence, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
